A Dress to Marry and Bury

portugal pavilion folkoramaOn Sunday night we visited the Portuguese pavilion at the Folklorama Festival here in Winnipeg.

merle-me-portugalMy friend Merle and I posed in some ethnic costumes outside while we waited for our turn to enter the building. portugal ethnic dressWe would learn more about traditional Portuguese costumes inside.mordoma-dress-These black dresses were worn by brides in the Minho region of Portugal. The black color was apparently a sign of the bride’s fidelity to her husband on her wedding day. The dress was saved and when the woman died she was buried in it.  The same dress for marrying and burying. Quite practical and makes you think about how short our lives really are.
