Fun With Naomi

marylou and naomiWe’ ve been staying with our friends Jeff and Anna in Homosassa Florida for the last week and I’ve been having lots of fun with their six-year-old daughter Naomi. She’s a delight. little girl peeling potatoesOne night she helped me make supper and peeled all the sweet potatoes.  It was a hard job but she stuck to it with lots of determination.

on the i=padShe showed me how to make a puzzle out of a photograph on the i-pad.

little girl using the rainbow loomNaomi got a Rainbow Loom for Christmas. I’d seen similar looms at a family gathering in Ontario where three young girls had them. Apparently the Rainbow Loom was the most popular gift given during this Christmas season. Naomi made me two rings with her loom.rainbow loom ringsShe also makes bracelets and necklaces. She tried to show me how the loom works but my feeble attempts at creating jewelry pieces made me admire her expertise even more.

six year old doing homeworkOne night Naomi let me help her with her homework. She’s great a figuring out math problems and she loves to spell. After we’d studied her spelling test words she wanted me to dictate more words to her and she filled up two full sheets with rows of words. I couldn’t stump her. She got 100% on her spelling test the next day. marylou and taylorWe’ve also been having fun with Naomi’s younger sister Taylor.

taylor on exercise ballBoth Taylor and Naomi take gymnastics and they can do all kinds of tricks- cartwheels and somersaults included. dave and taylorTaylor is clowning around with Uncle Dave at the table. She’s not always sure when to take him seriously.seven rivers presbyterian churchWe went to see Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church and School where Naomi and Taylor go to school and where Naomi and Taylor’s Dad  Jeff is a grade five teacher and their mother Anna works as an educational assistant. 20 month oldWe’ve also enjoyed little Caleb, Jeff and Anna’s youngest child.  Naomi, Taylor and Caleb are helping us keep our grandparenting skills sharp.

Visiting The Herzogs- Hong Kong Connections

herzog homeWe spent the last couple nights in North Carolina visiting our friends Jeff and Susan Herzog and their three boys in the lovely home Jeff and Susan designed and had custom-built on a scenic country property just outside of Asheville.  Jeff’s parents were also visiting from the west coast but they were gracious enough to share their children and grandchildren with us.

We taught in Hong Kong at International Christian School with the Herzogs for two years and reconnected with them this past summer at a wedding in Colorado.

I feel like I know the Herzog’s sons because Susan blogs about them so faithfully and I’ve been following their adventures for years. marylou with herzog boysThe Herzog boys love to play board games and they taught me Zhingo, Toot and Otto and Bernstein Bears. playing games with the herzog boysWe also played lots of rounds of Crazy Eights and Go Fish.

On Saturday morning Jeff took us to see his school Asheville Christian Academy. It is in a beautiful country setting. The Herzog boys attend school there too.jeff and daveJeff was playing a regular Saturday morning men’s basketball game at his school gym and Dave chatted with him on the bleachers when he wasn’t on the court. jeff's classroomWe saw Jeff’s classroom where he teaches calculus, statistics and other math and Bible courses.dave basketball shoesDave had brought along his basketball shoes so he could lace up and try shooting a few baskets when Jeff’s game was over. He hadn’t done that since his surgery. Dave and I spent Saturday afternoon exploring the fascinating city of Asheville. We had such a great time. I’ll write about that in a future post. susan and marylou

Susan and I had a good visit while we waited to pick up food at a smokehouse restaurant on Saturday night. We had a real southern feast around the Herzog’s dining room table of collard greens, ribs, pulled pork, cole slaw, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, okra, hush puppies and deep-fried pickles. dave and ezekialThe boys were fascinated with Dave’s online Scrabble games. First Ezekiel came to check it out. dave micah and ezekialThen Micah joined in to see what was going on. dave and the herzog boysFinally Jonah came over too and all three boys were giving Dave advice on what kind of words to make. playing table top hockey Dave and Micah play a little table top soccer.high fivesHigh Fives when the game was over. bed time storyThey took a break from game playing for a bedtime story.finding winnipeg

Ezekiel shows us that he knows where Winnipeg is on the big map of the world on the family room wall. We hope the Herzogs will come and visit us in Winnipeg some time. dave and jeffWe appreciated the Herzog’s warm southern hospitality. Teaching in Hong Kong has given us friends in so many places and it’s nice to reconnect with them on our travels.

ICS Reunion in Colorado- Part One

YMCA of the Rockies We are at the YMCA of the Rockies Snow Mountain in Colorado attending a reunion of past and present teachers of International Christian School in Hong Kong.

dave, jon, cathHere’s Dave with Jon and Cath.  Jon organized the reunion. The YMCA ranch is very near his parents’ home.  Our reunion coincides nicely with the Colorado wedding reception for Jon and Cath who were married earlier this summer in New Zealand. mini golf at snow mountain ranch

Dave is still on crutches following his hip surgery but he didn’t let that interfere with him enjoying a round of mini golf soon after we arrived. smores in rocky mountains

After supper activities the first day included making smores around a fire and playing Dutch Blitz and other card games with such enthusiasm that a staff person had to come into the lodge the ICS gang is sharing and ask us to keep the noise down.

me and rebekah at waterfallThe second morning I participated in a group hike up to a waterfall. It wasn’t a very strenuous hike but we sure noticed that the altitude of 9000 feet made breathing just a little more difficult. ladder golf

In the afternoon there were ladder golf and horseshoe tournaments.

jon's parents' homeIn the evening Jon’s parents invited us all to their beautiful home for a barbecue. food at widdifields

The food was excellent.

dave visiting in coloradoIt was great to share stories about the many past experiences we’ve all shared.

dave and rebekahIt was nice to spend time together with people who played such a big role in our lives during our time in Hong Kong and were part of our overseas community and family.
