We hiked a gorgeous trail along the Atlantic Ocean beginning in New Perlican and ending at the lighthouse in Heart’s Content. It was called the d’Iberville trail and I didn’t realize till we visited Signal Hill in St. John’s and saw a movie about Newfoundland history that d’Iberville was the bold and bloody general sent to Newfoundland by the French to take over the territory in 1696.
He ruthlessly laid waste to some 36 English villages, leaving many families homeless, killing 200 men and imprisoning 700 more. It was hard to believe that the beautiful trail we walked was part of the route of destruction taken by d’Iberville’s army as they marched through the Avalon Peninsula.
I am glad I didn’t know about the trail’s violent history as we walked it.
