Women Should Be Leading! Without Them Men Turn Into Morons!

This week there have been a plethora of news stories promoting the idea that our world would be much better off if women instead of men dominated the political landscape. On Monday former American President Barack Obama was speaking at a private leadership event in Singapore and said he does not plan on getting back into political leadership because he believes in leaders stepping aside. “If you look at the world and look at the problems it’s usually old people — usually old men — not getting out of the way,” he said. He commented that while women aren’t perfect they are in his opinion indisputably better than men. “I’m absolutely confident that if for two years every nation on earth was run by women, you would see significant improvement across the board on just about everything … living standards and outcomes.”

Sanna Marin Finland’s new prime minister

Then Forbes magazine writer Carmen Niethammer wrote about Finland electing 34-year-old Sanna Marin as its prime minister. Marin has formed a coalition government with four other political parties all led by women. In Marin’s new cabinet, twelve of the nineteen posts have women at the helm.  Interestingly one of the factors that Niethammer feels has contributed to the large representation of women in government in Finland is its excellent government-subsidized child care program.

Rona Ambrose the former leader of the Conservative Party of Canada

On Monday Winnipeg Free Press columnist Tom Brodbeck urged the Conservative Party of Canada to elect a woman as its next leader. In fact, he says doing so is almost a necessity if the party wishes to have a future. He says Conservatives need to convince voters they are modern and progressive and no longer drag around socially conservative baggage.  Electing a woman as its leader would be a desperately needed image changer for the party. Brodbeck goes on to say we need to attract many more women into politics in our country at every level. He bemoans the fact that right now not a single province is led by a woman.  He says it is high time Canada had a female prime minister.

Then there’s Melinda Gates’ statement this week in a Fortune 500 magazine article.  Influential people were asked what ideas will shape the coming decade and Melinda said it is that women of all backgrounds will increasingly be the ones making decisions, controlling resources, shaping perspectives, and solving the world’s collective challenges. She says such a major shift won’t be easy and won’t happen by accident but it needs to happen.

Finally, there was Andrew Yang’s comment in the Democratic debate last night.  The presidential candidate said,  “Our country is deeply misogynist, and most of us know that because money and men are tied together. The fact is strong societies would elect more female leaders.  I’m on the record saying that you need both strong men and strong female leaders in government because the fact is if you get too many men alone, and leave us alone for a while, we kind of become morons.”

  1. It is hard to believe that women could do as bad a job in governing as men have done
