A Prayer For the New Year

I first heard this prayer at my son’s university graduation ceremony. It was read by Winnipeg’s former mayor Bill Norrie who was the commencement speaker.  It is a 1577 work attributed to Sir Francis Drake. It seems a fitting challenge as we begin 2016.

ship in the sydney harborDisturb us Lord,

When we are too well pleased with ourselves,

When our dreams have come true

Because we dreamed too little,

When we arrived safely

Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us Lord, to dare more boldly.

Venturing on winter seas

Where storms will show your mastery.

Where losing sight of land

We shall find the stars.
