Winter came to Winnipeg this weekend. We have snow on the ground. When we lived in Hong Kong winter wasn’t heralded by the presence of snow but by the chestnut vendors appearing on the streets. The unique scent of the roasting chestnuts was a sure sign that cooler weather was on its way. The chestnuts were roasted in big tilted woks in a mixture of glossy black sand and sugar. The vendor was constantly stirring the chestnuts so they didn’t burn. I miss the smell of roasting chestnuts.
