My mother’s grandchildren formed a choir to sing Now Thank We All Our God at her funeral. They did a beautiful job and I know my mother who loved music would have been so happy they sang at her memorial service. I told a friend I wished Mom had been there to hear them sing. “She was,” said my friend.
Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices, who wondrous things has done, in whom this world rejoices; who from our mothers' arms has blessed us on our way with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today. O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, with ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us; and keep us still in grace, and guide us when perplexed; and free us from all ills, in this world and the next.
I had always thought of the hymn Now Thank We All Our God as one for Thanksgiving but the words were very appropriate as a testament to my mother’s life and faith as well. Three of her grandchildren paid tribute to her at her funeral giving examples of her selflessness, her service to others, the gentle manner in which she encouraged and supported them, the way she shared her love of music and books with them and her unconditional love for them.
